On June 17, 2024<\/strong>, the Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi, and Prokletije organized the first local workshop in Montenegro<\/strong> within the MED GIAHS<\/strong> project. The event, held in Berane<\/strong>, brought together 31 key stakeholders<\/strong>, including katun farmers, representatives of local governments, and protected area managers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The workshop introduced the MED GIAHS project<\/strong>, which aims to preserve and promote traditional agricultural landscapes while integrating them into sustainable tourism initiatives. In addition to presenting the project\u2019s objectives, the event served as a platform to collect crucial data for the GIAHS application process<\/strong>, which will contribute to the development of a joint strategy and action plan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A key part of the workshop focused on support schemes for katun farmers to enhance their sustainable tourism offers<\/strong>, ensuring that this rich cultural heritage is properly showcased. Participants had the opportunity to learn about available support mechanisms, including the opportunity to take part in another EU-funded project, Cross-Re-Tour<\/strong>, which facilitates the development of tourism services based on traditional cattle breeding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Participants shared their insights on the challenges and opportunities of traditional pastoral systems, discussing how to strengthen their recognition and ensure their sustainability. The collected information will support further steps in positioning Montenegro\u2019s katuns as part of the globally important agricultural heritage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The event marked an important step in the GIAHS designation process<\/strong>, reinforcing collaboration among farmers, institutions, and conservation entities in shaping the future of sustainable agriculture and rural tourism in Montenegro.<\/p>\n
