On June 17, 2024<\/strong>, the RDA BKP organized the first local workshop in Montenegro within the MED GIAHS<\/strong> project. The event, held in Berane, brought together 31 key stakeholders<\/strong>, including katun farmers, local government representatives, and protected area managers.<\/p>\n

Preserving Traditional Landscapes<\/h4>\n

The workshop introduced the MED GIAHS project, which focuses on preserving traditional agricultural landscapes and integrating them into sustainable tourism. Beyond presenting objectives, the event served as a vital platform for collecting data necessary for the GIAHS application process, supporting the development of a joint strategy and action plan.<\/p>\n

A key focus was on support schemes for katun farmers. Participants were introduced to the EU-funded project Cross-Re-Tour<\/strong>, which facilitates the development of tourism services built upon traditional cattle breeding and seasonal pastoral life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Strengthening Pastoral Systems<\/h4>\n

Participants shared insights on the specific challenges and opportunities of traditional pastoral systems. Discussions centered on how to strengthen the recognition of katuns and ensure their sustainability, ensuring that this unique cultural heritage is showcased professionally and authentically.<\/p>\n

This event marked a significant milestone in the GIAHS designation process<\/strong>, reinforcing collaboration between farmers and institutions to shape the future of sustainable agriculture and rural tourism in Montenegro.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
