About the Project

The Danube region boasts one of the richest forest inventories in Europe. The Danube WoodsRoute project focuses on the valorization of wood-based cultural heritage and the development of sustainable green tourism. The goal is to preserve “wooden civilization” and traditional crafts by integrating them into contemporary eco-tourism offerings.

Challenges we address:

  • Underutilization of wooden cultural heritage and traditions in tourism.
  • Disappearance of traditional wood craftsmanship and loss of skills.
  • Lack of green business initiatives and sustainable local value chains.
  • Threats to forest biodiversity due to the underutilization of traditional tree species.

Project Objectives

The main objective is to ensure the long-term sustainable use and valorization of forest resources and wooden heritage through:

  • Development of the Danube Woods Cultural Route.
  • Creation of innovative eco-tourism products and services rooted in traditional knowledge.
  • Stimulating rural development through sustainable local value chains.
  • Capacity building for investors and young people in the craftsmanship and tourism sectors.

Partnership and Collaboration

The consortium consists of 17 partners from 11 countries working together to establish a transnational network. The Lead Partner is BSC Kranj (Slovenia), with the Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi and Prokletije serving as the partner for Montenegro.
