The film presented here documents the intensive field research conducted during the creation of the speleological cadastre for our region. This activity was realized as part of the project “Year-Round Tourism in Mountain Destinations of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro,” funded by the European Union and implemented by the Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi, and Prokletije (RDA BKP).
About the Film: A Journey to the Center of the Mountain
Prepared by the Speleological Club “Akovo” from Bijelo Polje, this documentary serves as a visual diary of researchers who spent months visiting the most hidden corners of Bjelasica, Komovi, and Prokletije. The film showcases the exploration of caves and pits that had not been systematically documented until now, revealing fascinating subterranean chambers, cave formations, and the specific biodiversity of our underground world.
The Speleological Cadastre – A Foundation for the Future
Creating the cadastre was not only a scientific challenge but also a crucial step toward enriching the tourism offer of Northern Montenegro. The primary objectives of this activity were:
Identification and Mapping: Precisely locating and documenting speleological sites across the wider mountain area.
Potential Assessment: Analyzing which explored caves could become part of the tourism offer (speleo-tourism), while strictly adhering to ecological standards.
Database Creation: Establishing a professional foundation for further scientific research and nature protection plans.
Year-Round Tourism: From Peaks to Depths
The project under which this film was created focuses on developing mountain destinations throughout all 365 days of the year. While hiking and katun tourism take place on the surface, speleology opens an entirely new dimension—the underground. Speleological Club “Akovo,” as a long-term partner of the Agency, has utilized its professional expertise to make these invisible resources visible to both experts and the general public.
This film serves as a reminder of the wealth hidden beneath our feet and the importance of preserving these sensitive ecosystems that have remained untouched for centuries.
