Welcome to Berane, a town on the Lim River, surrounded by mountains and cultural landmarks of Polimlje. The cultural route takes you through the main street, museums, monasteries and monuments, revealing the rich history and traditions of this region.
Main street and old town
The Berane promenade, designed after Parisian boulevards, and the old begluk with its vakuf house reflect the town’s commercial and social life. Here were the first pharmacies, inns and fountains fed by monastery springs.
“The Berane promenade is as old as the town – a place to walk, see and be seen.”
Museums and monuments
The Polimlje Museum preserves over 9000 artifacts from prehistory to modern times. The Freedom Monument on Jasikovac, 18 meters high, is surrounded by granite blocks inscribed with the history of Polimlje. The House of Vojvoda Gavro Vuković tells the story of Montenegrin diplomacy.
“On Jasikovac, the history of Polimlje is carved in stone – every era has its record.”
Monasteries and Petnjica
Đurđevi Stupovi from 1213, Šudikova and Kaludra testify to spirituality and fresco traditions. Petnjica is known for its three-story mosque, apples and legends of caves with hidden treasure. Berane is also the town of sweet kačamak – a unique local specialty.
