Katun Roads: Thematic Routes

Guardians of tradition through a network connecting people and nature

For centuries, katuns have been the heartbeat of the Montenegrin mountains—places where people moved in summer for livestock grazing and where authentic customs were born. Through a network of international projects, we mapped these thematic routes with a focus on direct support to households. Over 60 families received solar panels and tourism training, allowing visitors to step directly into the heart of Montenegrin hospitality.

Bjelasica and the Borderline Heights

“Untold Bjelasica” focuses on the lesser-known, gentle landscapes around Biogradska Gora National Park, connecting lush pastures and springs through sustainable mountain tourism projects. On the other hand, the thematic route “Borderline Heights” represents a true challenge across the massifs of Prokletije, Hajla, and Smiljevica. Developed through an IPA cross-border cooperation project, this trail connects over 30 katuns along the border with Kosovo and Albania.

Our goal was clear: to valorize cultural heritage while preserving the environment and supporting rural development. Today, these thematic routes proudly present to the world our most valuable assets – our tradition and premium local products.

Pešter and the Great Highlands

The “Pešter Pastures” route explores the Vlah and Cmiljevica mountains, leaning against the Pešter plateau, where special efforts were made through EU funds to equip households with solar energy for receiving guests. The longest addition to the network is the “Great Highlands” route, approximately 500 km long. It connects Durmitor, Sinjajevina, and Pivska Planina, serving as a key trail for cyclists and long-distance hikers.

By developing these routes, we didn’t just open new trails; we helped Montenegrin highlanders stay on their ancestral lands and sell their organic products, such as cheese, cream, and honey, right at their doorstep. These thematic routes are a bridge preserving our tradition and untouched nature.
