Kolašin: A Mountain Spa and the Heart of the Ranges

Welcome to Kolašin, a town at 954 masl, surrounded by six mountains. The cultural route takes you through the powder magazine, botanical garden, museums, monuments and the Morača Monastery – revealing the history, legends and traditions of this region.

Powder magazine and churches

On Vinića Hill stands a powder magazine built in the shape of a cross, a symbol of resistance and faith. The Church of St. Dimitrije, built in 1888 from the stones of the old church of St. John the Baptist, became the spiritual center of Kolašin.

“Kolašin is the wartime capital of Montenegro – a place where freedom was defended with life.”

Museums and monuments

The Regional Museum preserves history and customs, while monuments at Breza and in the town center commemorate the victims of World War II. Kolašin was the site of many battles and congresses of antifascists and women of Montenegro.

“The soul of Kolašin is written in the courage of Rovčani, Moračani, Vasojevići and Uskoci.”

Morača Monastery and tradition

The Morača Monastery, built in 1252, with the fresco “The Raven Feeding Prophet Elijah,” is one of Montenegro’s most beautiful cultural treasures. Kolašin is also known for its gastronomy – layered cheese, kačamak, cicvara and lamb from Sinjajevina.
