Regional Cooperation and Heritage Preservation: The Path to Sustainable Rural Development

As part of activities to promote regional development and cross-border cooperation, we present a discussion with key actors shaping the future of Balkan rural areas. The focus is on support mechanisms for local communities, with a special emphasis on the role of regional initiatives in economic empowerment.

Synergy of Agriculture and Tourism

Jelena Krivčević, representing the Standing Working Group for Regional Rural Development (SWG RRD), analyzes the importance of integrating agricultural producers into broader tourism routes. Emphasis is placed on cross-sectoral cooperation and utilizing available funds to develop authentic tourism products that encourage youth to remain in rural areas.

Preserving architectural heritage and traditional construction methods is not an obstacle to modern development, but the most significant capital the region possesses for sustainable tourism.

Sandra Kapetanović from the Expeditio organization focuses on the protection and valorization of the cultural landscape. During the discussion, it was highlighted that cultural heritage, integrated with natural beauty, is a key resource for increasing the competitiveness of rural areas on the international market.

The conclusions point to the necessity of an integrated approach to spatial planning and economic development, with strong cooperation between the NGO sector, local authorities, and small entrepreneurs.

A Bridge Between Resources and Sustainability

Only through a joint approach and standardization of quality can the long-term sustainability of rural communities be ensured, while protecting their unique identity as the foundation for the future development of cross-border regions.
