Jelena Krivčević, Director of the Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi, and Prokletije (RDA BKP), summarized the agency’s key successes and announced ambitious plans for 2024. The focus remains on international awards confirming that sustainable tourism in Northern Montenegro is on the right track, alongside the protection of traditional lifestyles.
Gold Award in Madrid for “Katun Roads”
Our long-term work on the “Katun Roads” tourism product, developed since 2016 with the support of European funds, has been crowned with a prestigious award. At the FITUR international tourism fair in Spain, this project was named the best tourism product in the field of active tourism—a huge boost for the households preserving our tradition.
A key priority is placing Montenegrin katuns under international UN protection as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). This status will ensure permanent recognition as unique systems that merge agriculture and nature.
Our signature brand, “Mountain Bounty”, continues to expand. Through a new project from the Danube Call, the authentic flavors of our region will be included in the official European Gastro Route, providing further promotion for small producers and households engaged in traditional food preparation.
RDA BKP continues to provide solar panels and innovative sanitary solutions, ensuring that young people have decent working conditions and the opportunity to supplement their income through tourism without harming the environment.
A Bridge Between Tradition and Sustainable Development
All these projects, predominantly funded by the European Union, confirm a growing awareness of rural issues and prove that the future of the North lies in the synergy of authentic heritage and modern sustainability standards.
