RTCG: Our Heritage – Katuns as a living monument and an opportunity for the future

In the latest episode of the show “Our Heritage” (Naša baština), the focus was placed on one of the most precious resources of Northern Montenegro – the katuns. Jelena Krivčević, Director of the Regional Development Agency (RDA) for Bjelasica, Komovi, and Prokletije, detailed the significance of recent successes in protecting this “living heritage.”

Krivčević emphasized that katuns are not merely sites for summer livestock grazing, but complex systems that preserve biodiversity, authentic architecture, and centuries-old knowledge. A special focus was placed on the nomination process for the GIAHS list (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems) of the UN FAO, which would bring Montenegro global recognition and open doors for stronger tourism and economic valorization.

During the discussion, Krivčević highlighted the importance of synergy between agriculture and tourism. She explained how projects such as “Katun Roads” directly assist herding families in staying on the mountains by transforming their traditional lifestyle into a unique tourism offering that attracts visitors from around the globe.

However, she also warned of significant challenges – depopulation and the urgent need for better infrastructure to motivate younger generations to continue the tradition of “izdig” (seasonal migration to mountain pastures).

The episode concluded with the message that institutional protection, recently achieved by declaring the practice of “izdig” a national intangible cultural asset, is only the beginning of a long journey toward the permanent preservation and sustainable development of the Montenegrin mountains.
