The RDA BKP is organizing the second local workshop within the international project MED GIAHS (Mediterranean Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems). The workshop will be held on March 26, 2025, in Berane, at the Agency’s premises, gathering key stakeholders to discuss the future of Montenegro’s mountain pastures.
Key Topics and Objectives
The workshop will focus on the strategic steps necessary for the international recognition of katuns. Participants will work on the following core areas:
- • GIAHS Concept: Introduction to the criteria for inclusion on the prestigious FAO list.
- • Co-creation: Recommendations for developing tourism experiences within katuns.
- • Vision & Mission: Defining the long-term goals of katuns as GIAHS sites.
- • Best Practices: Reviewing successful sustainable tourism examples from the region.
- • Strategic Planning: Discussion on the Strategy for sustainable rural tourism and recommendations for the Action Plan.
Positioning Montenegro’s Heritage
Through this project, Montenegro aims to recognize and position its katuns as dynamic agricultural heritage systems. These areas represent a strong potential for sustainable development, economic empowerment of rural communities, and the global promotion of our cultural identity.
The MED GIAHS initiative is a critical step toward international recognition of the unique pastoral traditions that have shaped the Montenegrin landscape for centuries.
