Traditional Embroidery Workshops Held within the Danube Crafts Project

Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi and Prokletije has successfully implemented a series of traditional embroidery workshops within the Danube Crafts project, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Danube Region Programme.

The workshops were organized following a public call that generated significant interest, confirming the importance of preserving and revitalizing traditional crafts within the local community. A total of 26 participants successfully completed the training on traditional embroidery, during which they acquired basic knowledge and skills in embroidery techniques.

Special attention was given to Montenegrin embroidery, which developed in the 17th century and is considered one of the most significant forms of cross-stitch embroidery. Its value has also been recognized internationally, as evidenced by the publication “Autopsy of the Montenegrin Stitch” by Amy Mitten. Through these workshops, efforts are being made to enhance its visibility and valorisation within Montenegrin society.

The workshops aimed not only to preserve traditional knowledge but also to connect it with contemporary development trends. Particular emphasis was placed on the economic empowerment of women, through the acquisition of practical skills that can serve as a basis for developing new products and additional sources of income.

In the next phase of activities, the development of prototype souvenirs is planned, inspired by traditional motifs characteristic of the mountainous regions of Montenegro. These products will be developed in cooperation with local tourism stakeholders, with the aim of integrating them into the region’s tourism offer.

In this way, traditional embroidery gains a new dimension – from a skill passed down through generations to a contemporary product that contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage, the development of tourism, and the strengthening of the local economy. It is particularly encouraging that the participants included female youth population, and that, due to high interest, an additional cycle of workshops will be organized.

This initiative represents a concrete example of how linking cultural heritage, creative industries, and sustainable tourism can create long-term development opportunities for local communities, while preserving the authentic identity of the region.
