Population of this region is grouped in 9 municipalities – Andrijevica, Berane, Bijelo Polje, Gusinje, Kolasin, Mojkovac, Plav, Petnjica and Rozaje. Gusinje and Petnjica have recently obtained status of municipality, previously they have been parts of Plav and Berane municipalities.
Each of the mentioned municipalities has almost equally serious problem of migration, due to bad economic situation in the region. Unemployment rate in north of Montenegro in 2013. has been 21,9%, compared to unemployment rate of 11,7% in coastal area and 13,1% in central region.
Total number of inhabitants in the region according to 2011 Census is 138.166.
