As part of activities aimed at the economic empowerment of Northern Montenegro, the Regional Development Agency (RDA) for Bjelasica, Komovi, and Prokletije is conducting a project dedicated to the “Invisible Women” of rural areas. The focus is on the women who are the pillars of agriculture and rural tourism, yet whose labor often remains outside official statistics.
Ownership Challenges and Institutional Support
Jelena Krivčević, on behalf of RDA, highlights discouraging data regarding land and property ownership by women, which directly limits their ability to apply for national support measures. Through publications and fieldwork, the agency aims to draw institutional attention to the need for legal adjustments to ensure fairer access to funds for rural women.
A prime example of successful transformation is Velinka Vera Pavićević from Žabljak, whose farm has become a renowned agrotourism destination. Her story confirms that organic production and the preservation of authentic recipes can perfectly align with modern tourism standards.
These efforts are part of the broader Mountain Bounty brand, which showcases the finest products of the Montenegrin mountains. Connecting traditional skills with modern promotion is essential for attracting visitors seeking an authentic rural experience while securing social stability for women in rural communities.
The future of rural development lies with women and younger generations ready to innovate. Removing administrative barriers is crucial to making the countryside a place of high-quality economic life.
A Bridge Between Tradition and Economic Independence
Our vision is an empowered Montenegrin countryside where the invisible work of women is recognized and valued. Only through the synergy of identity preservation and economic empowerment can we ensure the long-term sustainability of the Northern rural areas.
