As part of the initiatives to valorize the resources of Northern Montenegro, the Regional Development Agency (RDA) for Bjelasica, Komovi and Prokletije presents “Mountain Bounty” – a unique concept that connects traditional cuisine with modern tourism trends. This project, recognized and awarded at the international level, focuses on collecting and standardizing the forgotten recipes of our grandmothers, thereby directly preserving the intangible cultural heritage of the region.
The “Mountain Bounty” publication is not just a collection of recipes, but an insight into the culture and history of mountain areas through food. Dishes such as kolobotnjica, češkek, or nettle porridge (skrob od kopriva), which for decades were the staples of rural household diets, are now becoming an exclusive offering for visitors seeking authenticity. Through training and cooperation with rural households, these traditional delicacies have found their way to tourists’ tables, offering them healthy, homemade food with a minimal ecological footprint.
The special significance of the project is reflected in the economic empowerment of rural women, who are the primary guardians of these recipes. By enabling them to market their products and culinary skills directly at their doorstep, rural tourism becomes a key supplement to family income. This not only raises the living standard in rural areas but also promotes the “farm-to-table” concept, which is currently one of the most valued trends in global tourism.
The Regional Development Agency continues to work on the digitalization and promotion of these contents, making them accessible to the general public and international experts. The goal is to position Northern Montenegro as an essential destination for lovers of nature, tradition, and premium local products through gastronomic routes and authentic experiences in the katuns.
