Electrifying Katuns on Bjelasica: Supporting Tradition and Tourism Development

Within the cross-border project “Katun Roads of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina”, implemented by the National Tourism Organization and the Regional Development Agency (RDA), the installation of solar systems for local herders has begun on Bjelasica Mountain. This activity, funded by the European Union through the CBC BiH-MNE program, represents a key step towards modernizing life in katuns and creating conditions for quality tourism services.

Field Work

Although conditions on the mountain have already become harsh due to cold weather, work continues intensively to ensure the planned systems are installed within the next two weeks.

This support is vital for preserving seasonal migration to katuns – one of our oldest traditions and an important cultural heritage that already enjoys UNESCO protection in countries such as Italy and Spain.

Tourism as the Future

While the number of herders in the mountains is decreasing, we believe tourism will be the key factor in preserving this tradition. Tourists already recognize the authentic value of katuns, often more clearly than we do ourselves, confirming the justification of efforts to make katuns a more visible part of the tourism offer of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
