Project Overview

The Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi and Prokletije is implementing this project to bridge the gap between science and industry, aligned with Montenegro’s Smart Specialization Strategy. The focus is on mobilizing young researchers to develop practical, off-grid solutions for rural tourism households in mountain katuns.

Main Priorities:

  • Developing sustainable solutions for households without access to the power and water grid.
  • Providing technical and commercial experience to young research talents.
  • Preserving traditional architecture while introducing modern off-grid capacities.

Project Results

1. Capacity Building of Young Researchers
A multidisciplinary team (specialists in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable architecture) addresses the specific challenges of katun living. Key focus areas include:

  • Integrated off-grid solutions for bathrooms and compost toilets.
  • Innovative accommodation designs that maintain authentic cultural characteristics.
  • Creation of detailed construction projects using materials available on the domestic market.

2. Applied Research and Practical Piloting
Designed approaches are tested through 5 pilot cases spread across different territories to ensure maximum peer-to-peer learning. This result includes:

  • On-site testing and refinement of designed solutions by researchers.
  • Development of comprehensive case studies for the academic community and SMEs.
  • Dissemination of findings to katun communities and policymakers.

Sustainability and Impact

By connecting young scientists with SMEs and rural households, the project establishes a research hub for renewable energy and sustainability. These affordable, localized solutions provide a roadmap for developing eco-tourism in sensitive mountain zones with zero environmental impact.
