Project Overview

The general objective of this project was to drive the cultural and economic development of the Bjelasica, Komovi, and Prokletije region by affirming traditional values. The specific focus was placed on increasing the visibility of mountain pastures (katuns) as an integral part of Montenegro’s cultural heritage, ensuring their preservation and sustainable tourism valorization.

Main Objectives:

  • Raising awareness of the significance of katuns as unique cultural heritage.
  • Documenting the traditions, customs, and architecture of high-altitude settlements.
  • Promoting the region as an authentic cultural and tourism destination.

Key Results and Activities

1. Research and Material Collection
The project conducted a comprehensive collection of materials, including expert texts and authentic photographs documenting life in katuns across the region and the country. This database serves as a permanent record of a traditional way of life.

2. Publishing Cultural Heritage
A representative publication was prepared, presenting katuns as an invaluable cultural asset of Montenegro. The content was curated to appeal to both the academic community and tourists seeking authentic cultural experiences.

3. Bilingual Distribution and Promotion
A total of 2,000 copies of the publication were printed—1,000 in Montenegrin and 1,000 in English. This bilingual approach ensured wide promotion of the katuns on both domestic and international markets, significantly increasing the visibility of Montenegro’s northern region.
