Supporting Katun Households in Developing Tourism Experiences

As part of the international MED GIAHS project, the second thematic workshop was held on March 26, 2025, with the aim of strengthening the capacities of katun households and promoting their traditional way of life through sustainable tourism and the preservation of agricultural landscapes.

The workshop was hosted at the office of the Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi and Prokletije, bringing together 32 participants, including katun households from across Montenegro, experienced rural tourism hosts, tour guides, tourism agencies, and representatives of the Cultural Heritage Protection Office.

A key feature of the workshop was the peer-to-peer learning and knowledge exchange, where experienced providers offered guidance to katun households in shaping authentic tourism offers based on tradition, nature, and local identity.

Through group work and discussion, participants defined the mission and vision of katuns for the purposes of Montenegro’s GIAHS application, and identified core tourism experiences to be included in future katun-based tourism products. The focus was placed on preserving identity, promoting sustainable resource use, and showcasing local gastronomy and way of life.

The MED GIAHS project is funded by the European Union through the Interreg Euro-MED programme, under the thematic mission “Sustainable Tourism”, with the goal of identifying, protecting, and promoting Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems in the Mediterranean region.
